Did Corey Pavin promise Tiger Woods a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team ... or didn't he? That's the major question of Wednesday as Pavin, the captain of the American squad, is either backtracking from statements he supposedly made to Golf Channel reporter Jim Gray Tuesday or is flat out denying he said them.
Pavin was widely quoted, saying of Woods, "Of course I'm going to (pick him). He's the best player in the world."
Woods said in a press conference Tuesday at the site of the PGA Championship that he would accept a captain's pick if offered, though he hoped to play his way onto the team this weekend.
However, Pavin, who is actually higher on this year's money winnings list than Woods, reportedly said on his Twitter page Wednesday: "For the record, golfchannel and Jim Gray has misquoted me re: picking Tiger. I never said such a thing and will not say a thing until 09/07," which is the date Pavin must make his four captain's picks.
