Brett Favre says he'll play for the Vikings this year if his surgically repaired ankle is healthy enough, and he'll retire if it isn't. Thursday, he took a big step toward finding out whether he'll be good to go when the season starts.

Favre visited Dr. James Andrews, the world-renowned sports medicine expert who performed his ankle surgery this offseason, for a checkup today. There's no word on what Andrews said about the status of Favre's ankle, but Scott Hanson of NFL Network reported that Favre flew from Hattiesburg, Mississippi to Pensacola, Florida today to have the visit.

All indications are that Andrews would have to give Favre a fairly negative prognosis for Favre to call it quits. Favre likes playing for the Vikings, the Vikings like having Favre as their quarterback, and only if his ankle simply can't withstand an NFL season would Favre stay away.

But while Favre is taking his sweet old time about deciding whether to play, the Vikings' other veteran leader, Jared Allen, sounds like he's starting to lose patience.

"I do hope Brett comes back, but at this point we're pushing toward preseason," Allen told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. "So a decision's got to be made pretty quickly here."

If there's one thing Favre doesn't do well, it's make his decisions on retirement quickly.
