John Daly officially withdrew from the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, as a serious shoulder injury prevented the former champion from finishing his second round on Saturday morning.Daly notified tournament organizers late Friday night after he finished the seventh hole that he would not be returning on Saturday to finish his second round. The American shot an opening round 4-over 76 on Thursday and was already 5-over when play was suspended in the second round.
Daly believes he hurt his shoulder in a bunker on the first hole, "thinkin it happened on bunker hole 1, played thru in miserable pain, saw Tour Doc after play & have tore rotator cup after tests were done," Daly wrote on his Twitter account.
A torn rotator cuff would be a huge obstacle, severely limiting movement in Daly's shoulder and making it virtually impossible to swing a golf club. But how serious is it? "Not sure how long I'm out for---headed to see my Doc early tomorrow for an M.R.I. praying tests show not as bad & all works out," Daly added on Twitter. "right shoulder, so painful & swollen the size of a grapefruit--ice on my shoulder & tryin to type w/my left hand."
The 44-year-old long-driving Daly made a name for himself when he improbably won the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick as the ninth alternate into the field. With the win, he earned a lifetime exemption to the tournament. Since his victory in 1991, though, he has not advanced to the third round in 13 of 17 appearances and has not finished higher than 32nd.
Daly was playing in a group alongside fellow major champion winners Padraig Harrington and Davis Love III when he withdrew.
