Ricky Romero is one of those players who doesn't get as much attention as he probably deserves, simply because of the uniform he wears, but it doesn't appear he'll be leaving Toronto anytime soon. The left-hander has signed a five-year, $30.1 million contract with the Blue Jays that will cover the 2011-15 seasons and also includes a club option for 2016, the team announced Saturday.
Romero, 25, is in only his second major league season, but he has shown marked improvement over an already solid rookie campaign in going 9-7 with a 3.53 ERA in 23 starts. Though he leads the majors with an impressive 15 wild pitches, Romero's overall control numbers are much better than a year ago, with his walks per nine innings dropping from 4.0 to 3.2 and his strikeouts per nine up from 7.1 to 7.8.
The Blue Jays have some other talented arms, such as Brett Cecil, Shaun Marcum and Brandon Morrow -- who just missed a no-hitter last weekend -- but Romero has effectively fronted the rotation since Roy Halladay's departure and this contract extension will ensure that he remains the Jays' marquee pitcher.
Romero was the sixth overall pick in the 2005 draft out of Cal State-Fullerton. The new deal covers all of his arbitration-eligible seasons and the first year of his free-agent eligibility.
