Adrian Peterson Mentors Toby Gerhart: 'It's Just Football'
And Gerhart said it was Peterson who explained to him that there was nothing to be worried about before he took the field.
"I was nervous," Gerhart told the St. Paul Pioneer Press after the game. "I'll tell you that much. I was talking with Adrian. He said, 'Relax. It's just football. It's no different.' After that first play, that first hit, I settled down and relaxed, and it was just football. It was kind of fun."
That 22-yard run was Gerhart's only highlight, though, as he gained just two yards, total, on his other seven carries. But Gerhart says he's not worried about showing he can run the ball. The big thing Gerhart says he needs to improve upon is his pass blocking.
"I feel I pick things up pretty quickly," he said. "I'd say the one difference between college and our offense here is that the line protections change at the line of scrimmage. So, we can walk up, based on a defense, and have one play called. The offensive line can point out (the defense) or give a hand signal and completely change the protection. So, just being aware of that and trying to be on the same page as the offensive line has been the biggest thing."
