Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger saw preseason action against the Giants on Saturday.EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- He's not going to play in a game that means anything until October, but Ben Roethlisberger looked good enough Saturday night that Steelers fans have something to look forward to.

The Pittsburgh quarterback, who is suspended for at least the first four and possibly the first six games of the regular season because of off-field issues, completed 6-of-8 passes for 76 yards before leaving the game in the second quarter. He threw one interception on a bad decision-and-throw at the end of a play that broke down, but otherwise he appeared in midseason form.

The crowd here at the New Meadowlands Stadium booed Roethlisberger when he completed his first pass, but that was as strong a reaction as he got all night. Roethlisberger was accused of (though not charged with) sexual assault at a Georgia nightclub this past spring, the second time in the past two years he has found himself involved in such an incident.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Roethlisberger for six games but has said that he could shorten the suspension to four if Roethlisberger meets certain conditions involving his public behavior and counseling for his issues. Goodell recently said during a visit to Steelers training camp that Roethlisberger was doing everything that's been asked of him.

The most encouraging thing for the Steelers in the first half of Saturday's preseason game against the Giants may have been what happened after Roethlisberger left it. Byron Leftwich, their likely starting quarterback for those first four or six games, completed a 68-yard touchdown pass to Mike Wallace.
