Broncos' Injury Recovery Key to Rebound in Running Game

The Denver Broncos are hoping that their running game will come to life as the health of their team begins to improve.

So far in the preseason, the Broncos rushing attack is languishing. They have gained 111 yards, which ranks 30th in the league, and averaged a paltry 3.2 yards per rush in two exhibition games.

But the Broncos also have been without their top two running backs, starter Knowshon Moreno (hamstring) and his backup, Correll Buckhalter (neck/back) since they were hurt in training camp drills Aug. 1.

The offensive line also is in transition, with rookies Zane Beadles and J.D. Walton penciled in to start at left guard and center, respectively. Left tackle Ryan Clady (knee) also remains sidelined because of an injury suffered playing basketball during the offseason.

"We all have to execute, and we're not doing that at the highest level we're capable of," offensive lineman Russ Hochstein told the Denver Post after the Broncos fell to 0-2 in the preseason following Saturday's 25-20 loss to Detroit. "Obviously, those guys are great players and we'd love to have them back, and when they do get back, things will be great. But in the meantime, we still need to make it go and we're not doing that yet."

Beadles and Walton have been getting extensive repetitions in practice and in exhibitions -- both played the entire game in Denver's preseason opener at Cincinnati -- to accelerate their learning curve and to get them accustomed to the rigors of playing all four quarters once the regular season starts.

Without being specific, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels also said some of the team's injured players are getting close to coming back.

"I think that hopefully, we'll have some of the guys turn the corner this week," McDaniels said. "We're hopeful to have more guys out there against Pittsburgh. That's going to start with them being able to practice this week."

Rookie quarterback Tim Tebow (ribs), running back LenDale White (leg), and Buckhalter are among those who may be able to resume practice this week. The timing of the return of Clady and Moreno remains iffy.

The Steelers will visit the Broncos on Sunday night in the third exhibition game in which the regulars traditionally get their most extensive playing time of the preseason.
