Eli Manning to Practice Without Helmet

Eli ManningShawn Andrews will practice for the first time in a New York uniform Monday, but few will be watching the two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman. All of the focus when the Giants take the field in bucolic East Rutherford, N.J. will be on the guy in the baseball cap. That would be Eli Manning, who will rejoin his teammates for the first time since suffering a three-inch gash a week ago tonight against the New York Jets.

Manning's absence from the lineup five nights later against Pittsburgh was his first (other than the 2005 preseason finale when he was rested) since he took the job from veteran Kurt Warner as a rookie midway through the 2004 season.

Manning, who had 12 stitches and what he calls "a really cool scar," will practice Monday without a helmet, which of course makes coach Tom Coughlin very nervous.

"We're certainly going to be very, very careful," Coughlin said. "We don't allow anybody to touch the quarterback.. Most of our guys are really good at – if they do get free, they come up the field past the quarterback. We don't allow them to put their hands up or put their hands anywhere near where the quarterback's arm or release point would be. The guys are pretty much aware of that. I think that when you practice under those conditions, you're going to have to be very sharp. I'm sure we'll pick our spots, perhaps in the first practice anyway, as we get a feel for what's best."

Coughlin, who's hopeful that Manning will be able to wear a helmet and thus play Saturday against Baltimore, also expects running back Brandon Jacobs, who missed the loss to the Steelers with a stiff neck, to work today. Receiver Ramses Barden (back) is out for the week and running back D.J. Ware, a surprise starter ahead of Ahmad Bradshaw in Jacobs' absence, is likely, also sidelined with a concussion.

Bradshaw sat out the first series Saturday night, reportedly as punishment for being late to a team meeting during the prior week. Safety Antrel Rolle also did not start, reportedly for the same reason.
