Mustafa Shakur New Orleans HornetsMustafa Shakur was a revelation for the Tulsa 66ers last season in the NBA D-League. He averaged 19.3 points and 6.9 assists along with 4.5 rebounds for the 66ers, and had a PER of 22. That's pretty nifty stuff. He also showed considerable leadership, helping his team make the playoffs as a 25-year-old. He was called up last season but not given any time on a Thunder squad deep in backcourt depth.

Looks like he's getting another shot.

The Hornets today signed Shakur , via the Times-Picayune. NewOrleans.com reports it's a partially guaranteed contract for the upcoming season. Shakur is likely to be the third point guard behind Chris Paul and potentially combo guard Marco Belinelli so his position is less than guaranteed minutes. But for what the Hornets are looking for, he's perfect. A fast versatile guard that works well in transition is a nice reserve option.

Perhaps more notable in this, though, is the clear sign being sent from New Orleans' Dell Demps. For years the Hornets have been reticent to use the D-League in any capacity. With Demps at the helm, hired directly from the Spurs where he was, among other things, general manager of the Toros, a new era seems to likely be in effect. Signing Shakur is at the very least an indication that the D-League is no longer beneath their use. Signing Shakur means that D-League players are no longer off-limits. Whether this bears out for the rest of the organization's strategic player development plans remains to be seen.
