Ravens' Secondary Strengthens: Lardarius Webb Activated From PUP List

After a strong performance early in the 2009 season that ended with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, Baltimore Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb began recovery that has finally resulted with his activation from the physically unable to perform list.

This is great news for a team that has high expectations to play in the Super Bowl in February and for a secondary that has issues with covering the deep ball. Since cornerback Domonique Foxworth went down for the season with a torn ACL, the Ravens have been rumored to be willing to bring in another veteran cornerback via trade to help strengthen the secondary.

Having Webb back in the lineup is a tremendous relief for the Ravens, with cornerback Fabian Washington making his comeback from an ACL injury suffered a year ago. Cornerback Cary Williams has been a special surprise. In the first two preseason games, Williams had three interceptions. With Williams' good play and Washington's return, Webb will further bolster the Ravens' secondary. Trade talk for the Ravens' secondary has died down.

Webb passed his conditioning test and returned to practice this morning. Despite being limited in drills, Webb's cuts look sharp and since last week, he's sprinting, jumping, cutting fast, and appears to be stronger. Webb was on target to have made his return to practice last week, but he is scheduled to be ready at full strength for the regular season opener against the New York Jets.

The 2009 NFL Draft third-rounder may be the Ravens' best cornerback. Webb is great off the bump and has the speed to cover playmaking wide receivers deep down the field.

Note: Currently, safety Ed Reed (hip), running back Matt Lawrence (knee) and linebacker/special specialist Brendon Ayanbadejo (quads) remain on the PUP list. Wide receiver Demetrius Williams didn't practice on Monday due to the sprained ankle he sustained in the team's win over the Washington Redskins Saturday night. Tight end Davon Drew and offensive tackle Stefan Rodgers returned to practice.
