Redskins Safety Kareem Moore Out 4-6 Weeks
"It's tough to lose a player like Kareem," coach Mike Shanahan said. "He's done a great job (and got hurt in) a freak situation on the (Ravens') fake punt."
Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett feels bad for Moore, a sixth-round draft choice in 2008, who was finally in position to be a starter ahead of Reed Doughty and Chris Horton, who shared a spot the past two seasons alongside LaRon Landry, who has moved from free to strong this year.
"I feel sorry for him," Haslett said. "He's a great kid. He's worked hard to get ... an opportunity to start. This is a setback for him, but he's gonna work (hard) to get back. We're gonna miss him, but we feel like we gotta pretty good backups. We'll put Reed back at free along with Chris and let those two battle it out and see who'll get the opener. We brought in (former Pittsburgh Steelers safety) Tyrone Carter because he's played in the system. He'll compete at the strong safety position. They'll hold it down. We'll be fine."
Doughty, a sixth-rounder in 2006, and Horton, a seventh-rounder in 2008, weren't exactly on the same page as Haslett.
"Reed's (Kareem's) backup so Reed will get to play," said Horton, who has recovered from the torn toe ligament that ended his 2009 season in Week 9. "My job is to keep supporting those guys and come out and play when the coaches give me the opportunity."
Doughty doesn't think he can wrest the job away from Moore the way Horton did to him when he was hurt in 2008.
"Anytime someone goes down, you gotta step in and be the starter, not the backup (but) once Kareem comes back, I'll be the backup," Doughty said.."He's not done for the season. Hopefully, he'll get back quicker than expected. I want to step in there and feel like no step was missed. We're 1-A and 1-B, not (number) one and (number) two. "
