Red Sox Place Claim on Johnny Damon

The Detroit Tigers found themselves in a bit of a bidding war with the Chicago White Sox this winter over Johnny Damon before signing the free agent, but now that they find themselves out of the playoff picture, they may be looking to move him.

The Tigers placed Damon on waivers on Thursday, and as of Monday afternoon, one team had placed a claim on Damon.

That team happens to be the one Damon helped win its first World Series title in 86 years back in 2004: the Boston Red Sox.

"It's probably as tough of a decision for me to make right now as it was for me to leave Boston for New York," Damon told reporters Monday. "It's something that, fortunately, we have some time to think about."

Of course, just because the Red Sox placed a claim on Damon, that doesn't mean he's on his way to Boston. First the Red Sox would have to work out a trade that the Tigers would agree to (or they would have to just let him go in a salary dump), and even if they can do that, Damon has the power to block a trade to all but eight teams, and Boston is not one of the eight.

Speaking to FanHouse's Ed Price last week, Damon indicated he was not inclined to go back to Boston.

So keep all that in mind as the Tigers explore an agreeable swap with Boston over the next 48 hours. Even if a deal is reached, Detroit is going to have to sell Damon on the idea as well.

Damon is hitting .270 with seven homers and 40 RBI for the Tigers this season.
