Caroline WozniackiThe USTA follows the rankings of the WTA when determining seeds for the U.S. Open for the women's draw.

So Caroline Wozniacki (right) of Denmark was given the No. 1 seed at the U.S. Open when the seeds were announced Tuesday. It is her first Grand Slam as the top seed. Because Serena Williams had to withdraw from the tournament with a foot injury, the 20-year-old Dane slipped into the No. 1 spot due to her world No. 2 ranking.

Wozniacki, who has won 14 of her last 16 matches, is coming off a championship title at the Rogers Cup. The seeds present a possible rematch of last year's final.

At last year's U.S. Open, Wozniacki finished runner-up to eventual champion Kim Clijsters. Clijsters, who returned to Flushing Meadows to win the tournament last year, is the tournament's No. 2 seed.

Rounding out the top five are No. 3 Venus Williams, No. 4 Jelena Jankovic and No. 5 Samantha Stosur.

Venus Williams is the only seeded American at the tournament.
