Police Re-Open Case Involving J.R. Smith
One day after the Denver police told FanHouse that the district attorney would not pursue charges after his altercation with a non-NBA player at the team's practice facility on Aug. 13, Detective John White said Thursday afternoon that the case has been re-opened.
"We have new evidence that requires us to now re-examine the case, which is not all that unusual to do that," White said by phone. "That is the case. It is now an open investigation."
Smith's Denver-based attorney, the well-known David Lane, confirmed a ShamSports.com tweet that the player who claims he was attacked and who initially called the police is Damien Lolar (pictured above). The 26-year-old guard played at West Texas A&M and later for the now-defunct Colorado 14ers.
Lane, who was unaware the case had been re-opened when he spoke to FanHouse Thursday, declined comment until he had more information. A Nuggets official said the team will decline comment until the matter is resolved.
