When he got his right foot caught in the turf during an Aug. 17 practice after making a catch, Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver David Nelson thought his shot at making the roster had gone down with him.

Initial concerns were that he had torn his Achilles tendon, but an MRI revealed it was only a strain and he was back on the practice field this past Sunday, much to the relief of his hometown fans back in Wichita Falls, Texas, according to the Times Record News.

Nelson brings size to the wide receiver position with his 6-foot-5, 217-pound frame and, after fellow rookie receiver Marcus Easley was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury, a door opened for the University of Florida product to compete for that fourth receiver with another ex-Gator, Chad Jackson.

Nelson, who was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent, was given a game ball after catching four passes for 57 yards and a touchdown in Buffalo's preseason opening 42-17 loss at Washington and is ready to play Saturday night at Ralph Wilson Stadium against the Cincinnati Bengals. The other rookie receiver he was competing with, James Hardy, was waived because of a shoulder injury this week.
