Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo and Alex Sanchez, a clubhouse attendant for the Brewers, were robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot of a Milwaukee restaurant early Friday morning. WTMJ Radio, which initially reported the robbery, said that both Gallardo and Sanchez handed over their money and jewelry. Though Sanchez was struck in the head with the butt of the robber's gun, Gallardo was uninjured. Gallardo made a statement prior to the Brewers' game Friday but did not take any questions.
"It was a scary moment for me and Alex, a tough situation," Gallardo said. "Things like that happen in every city, everywhere you go, and it's unfortunate that happened to me and him. It was one of those random things. I've never had a problem like this before. We're all very thankful.
"We were just going ... getting a bite to eat before heading home. I'm trying to stay out of trouble, and unfortunately, trouble finds us. Nobody was seriously hurt. We're all OK. Both of us are fine. That was the main thing as far as the incident last night."
Gallardo pitched Thursday afternoon against the Dodgers, striking out 10 but allowing six runs in 6 1/3 innings to drop his record to 11-6 on the season.
People will inevitably ask what brought Gallardo to a restaurant at 2:30 in the morning, but the good news is of course that both Gallardo and Sanchez weren't seriously hurt. Gunpoint muggings are just as terrifying for baseball stars as they are for regular old folks, and we're lucky that things didn't get much more serious than they did.
