Raiders running back Michael Bush was scheduled to see a hand specialist after breaking his left thumb during Saturday night's exhibition against the San Francisco 49ers.

His status for the Raiders Sept. 12 regular season opener against the Tennessee Titans remains uncertain, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Bush was injured on a hit in the second quarter. He left the game having rushed seven times for 23 yards and a touchdown.

There's some reports that the Raiders will bring back Bush quickly, having him play with a protective cast over his thumb.

But personally, I would be extremely cautious about playing a running back with a cast on his hand. In the playoffs following the 1995 season, I was at a game between the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers came in as the defending Super Bowl champions and were heavily favored to get past the Packers. But on the 49ers' first play from scrimmage, Steve Young completed a pass in the flat to fullback Adam Walker, who was playing with a cast on his broken thumb. Walker was hit by linebacker Wayne Simmons and fumbled the ball. Cornerback Craig Newsome swooped in to grab the ball and returned the fumble 31 yards for a touchdown, giving Green Bay a lead it never relinquished in pulling off a monumental upset.

I relate that episode as a cautionary tale for anyone who might think that playing with a cast, especially for a running back, is no big deal. The Raiders should be cautious in the ways they use Bush, as long as he needs a cast over his thumb and hand.
