(Aug. 30) -- Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a bacteria that infects the intestines of people and animals. According to the Mayo Clinic, the majority of E. coli cases -- such as those that occur among travelers to developing countries -- are discomforting but relatively brief and generally harmless. Infected individuals are most often exposed to the bacteria through contaminated food or water, such as raw vegetables and poorly prepared ground beef.
