We'll be tracking the five-star matches of the day session during the U.S. Open in classic countdown fashion. Day 1 at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows did not lack for any excitement throughout the day, so if you missed any action, here is a rundown.5. Andy Roddick (9) defeats Stephane Robert 6-3, 6-2, 6-2: Roddick is looking to recapture the U.S. Open title he won in 2003. He was impressive on opening day, defeating Robert in straight sets and winning 80 percent of his first-serve points.
4. Marin Cilic (11) defeats Illya Marchenko 7-5, 6-3, 6-1: Marin Cilic who reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and fourth round at the French Open, was bounced in the first round at Wimbledon. Cilic had lost three in a row before beating Illya Marchenko in straight sets on Monday. If Cilic can find his form on the hard court, he is a dangerous No. 11 seed.
3. Kim Clijsters (2) defeats Greta Arn 6-0, 7-5: Defending champion Kim Clijsters returned to Flushing Meadows and overcame a four-game slip in the second set to defeat Arn in straight sets. Clijsters is a two-time champion at Flushing Meadows and is amongst a group of favorites to win her third U.S. Open title.
2. Gael Monfils (17) defeats Robert Kendrick 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4: It looked as if Kendrick, an unseeded American qualifier, was going to oust Monfils in the fifth set. But Kendrick's groundstrokes withered and Monfils gained his second wind to win a grueling five-set match in the heat against a pesky Kendrick.
1. Robin Soderling (5) defeats Andreas Haider-Maurer 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 5-7, 6-4: Soderling found himself in trouble at times throughout the match against the unseeded qualifier from Austria. Soderling, usually dominating the ace output in his matches, was on the receiving side Monday. The French Open runner-up had to stave off 34 aces from Haider-Maurer to survive and advance to the second round.
