Can you play quarterback? Can you handle the media scrutiny that comes with playing in the fishbowl that is New York? If you qualify on both counts, send your DVD and resume to Tom Coughlin, c/o the New York Giants, East Rutherford, N.J 07073.

That's not an actual job posting, but it might as well be. New York's decision to place quarterback Jim Sorgi on season-ending injured reserve today leaves only Rhett Bomar and Dominic Randolph behind starter Eli Manning. Bomar, a fifth-round selection in the 2009 draft who spent last year on the Giants' practice squad, has never played a regular season down.

Randolph, a rookie free agent re-signed on Aug. 19 -- six days after the victory over the Jets in which Sorgi injured his throwing shoulder and Manning was sidelined for a week with a forehead gash -- hasn't even taken a preseason snap.

"It depends on what the availability and what the cost is," coach Tom Coughlin said of the prospects of signing a veteran backup just 12 days before the season opener against Carolina. "Our people are not caught by surprise by (Sorgi's situation). Our guys have been working on this for a couple of weeks. We're investigating all of our options."

One of the options is gambling that Bomar, who starred at Sam Houston State after getting thrown off Oklahoma's team for NCAA violations, is ready to step in if Manning, who has never missed a game during his six seasons, goes down.

Bomar was 13 of 26 for 167 yards in the preseason loss to Pittsburgh during which Manning and Sorgi stood on the sideline.

"He hung in there, he took some shots, but he got us through the game and he made some plays," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said after the game. "There were plenty of plays out there I'm sure he wishes he could have had back, but he'll learn from that."

Bomar said the game "wasn't too fast" for him and that he never doubted that he belonged in the NFL.

"Depending on if he ... plays well on Thursday night (in the preseason finale against New England), we'll certainly have good evidence to think that he can do it," Coughlin said. "He's talented. We'll see how far we can go with it."

Randolph set numerous NCAA, Patriot League and school records during his four seasons at Holy Cross.
