Freddie Freeman might not mean much to the present of the Atlanta Braves. He does mean a lot to the future of the team, though, and that's why we're excited to see him in a Braves uniform come Wednesday. Freeman, 20, will be one of the players joining the Braves as the rosters expand to 40 men for the final month of the season and he's bringing quite a resume with him. He was named the International League's MVP, the first Brave to win it since Chipper Jones, on Tuesday because he posted an 898 OPS with 35 doubles, 18 home runs and 87 RBIs at Triple-A Gwinnett this year. He's also an excellent defensive first baseman and, rumor has it, cooks a fine rack of lamb on special occasions.
All of that probably won't help him find much playing time, however. Derrek Lee is ensconced at first and Troy Glaus will also be making his return from the DL on Wednesday.
With so much at stake, it's a pretty good bet that Bobby Cox will favor the veterans down the stretch. Freeman will probably get some chances as a pinch-hitter, but he's likely going to be mostly an observer during his first taste of life in the big leagues. Still, it isn't impossible to see a way for Freeman to play a role in the Braves run for the AL East.
Glaus has chronic knee problems and Lee is mired in the worst offensive season of his career which could -- strong emphasis on could -- open a door for Freeman to join housemate Jason Heyward in the lineup.
It probably doesn't happen, but we'll almost certainly see those two in the lineup every day for the 2011 edition of the Braves. If things go according to plan, that will continue to be the case for much of the next decade as Atlanta tries to find the new faces of their franchise with Cox and Jones riding off into the sunset.
