Freddy Adu apparently has answered the questions about his immediate soccer future in a three-word tweet on Tuesday morning: "Aris it is!"So the journeyman attacker, whose difficulty in sticking with a European club has been part of a captivating slide from 14-year-old soccer savior to borderline afterthought, will spend the season in northeast Greece with Aris Thessaloniki.
Adu, now 21, was loaned to Aris in January by Lisbon power Benfica, with whom he signed in the summer of 2007. The loan deal was scheduled to run through the 2010-11 season. Aris was his third loan destination after Belenenses and AS Monaco, and his stay there didn't seem to be going too well either since Adu turned up in Switzerland last month for a trial with FC Sion. It didn't work out.
He has scored just four goals since moving to Europe.
So, with no one else interested in his services, Adu is stuck at Aris until at least next summer. At that time, he'll likely be sent back to Lisbon, to another club that doesn't seem to want him. After that, it's anyone's guess. Another loan? Outright release? Perhaps a return to MLS?
Aris won its Greek league opener last week and has advanced to the group stage of the UEFA Europa League, where it was drawn into a difficult foursome featuring defending champion Atletico Madrid, Germany's Bayer Leverkusen and Norwegian champion Rosenborg.
The European transfer window closes on Tuesday night, meaning any player transactions must be finalized before then. The key American focus now will be national team midfielder Benny Feilhaber, who has only a few hours to escape from Danish second-division club AGF Aarhus.
