Giants' Cuts Buck NFC East Trend

Let's give props to the New York Giants for making their roster moves before practice Tuesday. Not only did rookie receiver Nyan Boateng, who was only with the team for 26 days, not have to practice for a game in which he wouldn't have played, but the early announcement allowed the media to ask coach Tom Coughlin about the moves -- and for fans to have them explained -- on the day they happened instead of the next day.

That's not the case in Philadelphia or Washington where coaches Andy Reid and Mike Shanahan have already held their press conferences. Shanahan did announce that receiver Malcolm Kelly is going on injured reserve, but that still leaves five Eagles and four Redskins getting cut without comment.

Dallas cut two rookie free agents Monday and seemed all but sure to waive veteran safety Pat Watkins Tuesday while putting tight end John Phillips on injured reserve and linebacker Stephen Hodge on the reserve physically unable to perform list, giving the Cowboys eight weeks to decide whether to activate him or move him to injured reserve.

In fairness to Reid and Shanahan, they didn't have as many injured reserve candidates as the Giants, who placed quarterback Jim Sorgi, receiver Sinorice Moss and linebacker Adrian Tracy on the shelf for the year while putting offensive lineman Kevin Boothe on the same list as Hodge.

The Redskins wound up cutting veteran snapper James Dearth, whom they signed earlier this month when youngster Nick Sundberg was struggling in camp. Washington also let go safety Lendy Holmes, who played in eight games as a rookie free agent in 2009 but whose chances were hurt by last week's addition of Tyrone Carter, a veteran of the 3-4 defense from his years with Pittsburgh.

The turk also came calling for offensive lineman Edwin Williams, who overcame his parents' drug addictions to win a scholarship to Maryland and made the 2009 Redskins as a rookie free agent, playing four games and starting two. And linebacker Hall Davis, acquired from St. Louis the previous day, was also waived. So much for having to give the Rams that conditional draft choice.

As of 4:15 p.m. ET, 15 minutes past deadline, there was still no word on the the Eagles' cuts.
