Laurent FignonTwo-time Tour de France winner Laurent Fignon died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer, the London Telegraph reported on its website. He was 50.

Fignon won 76 races during his career, but may be known best for a competition he didn't win. Greg LeMond rallied to beat Fignon by eight seconds during the final stage of of the 1989 Tour de France -- a loss that overshadowed the Frenchman's victories in the race in 1983 and 1984.

In his autobiography released last year, Fignon wrote about an instance where he was recognized on the street. "Ah, I remember you: you're the guy who lost the Tour by eight seconds." Fignon responded, "No monsieur, I'm the guy who won it twice."

He devoted an entire chapter of his book on the loss to LeMond.

Fignon, who has worked as a studio commentator for France 2 television in recent years, announced in 2009 that he had advanced cancer of the digestive system and was undergoing chemotherapy.

"Just woke to the news that Laurent Fignon has passed on," seven-time Tour de France champ Lance Armstrong wrote on Twitter. "He was a dear friend and a legendary cyclist. We will miss you, Laurent. RIP LF!!"

French Cycling Federation president David Lappartient told The Associated Press that Fignon was "a great champion who used a combination of talent and will to win the Tour de France twice."
