Mets Trade Jeff Francoeur to Rangers

APThe end of Jeff Francoeur's Mets career has seemed imminent for the past few days and now we finally know where he's headed; the Texas Rangers announced Tuesday night that they've acquired the struggling outfielder.

Francoeur's been the odd man out in the Mets' outfield since Carlos Beltran returned from his knee injury. The Rangers, meanwhile, are looking for some outfield insurance with Josh Hamilton's knee ailing.

The Rangers claimed Manny Ramirez on waivers earlier this week, but their record resulted in the White Sox being awarded the claim instead. Francoeur is no Manny Ramirez with his .236/.293/.369 line in 2010.

He's been even worse (.536 OPS) since July 1. He put up a great second half for the Mets last year, though, and so the Rangers are obviously hoping that a change of scenery from pitcher-friendly Citi Field to the hitter's haven they have in Arlington will be good for Francoeur.

In return, the Mets get light-hitting utility infielder Joaquin Arias. Arias, 25, has put up a .276/.290/.347 line in 50 games with Texas this year. With Francoeur due for arbitration next spring, and thus a raise on his $5 million deal, he was almost a lock to be non-tendered this winter. While Arias isn't a huge return, the Mets are lucky to get much of anything for the struggling outfielder at this point.

Francoeur's expected to join the Rangers Wednesday night, and since the deal went down before midnight, he's eligible for the Rangers' postseason roster, should he play well enough to merit a spot.
