Phillip Tisson, a member of a club soccer team representing the island nation of St. Lucia, was shot to death early Monday in Brooklyn, hours after he scored the game-winning goal in a semifinal of an international tournament.Tisson was a reserve midfielder for the St. Lucia national team when it failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. He appeared in several full international games for St. Lucia in 2008, when he was in his mid-20s.
Tisson, who reportedly was either 27 or 28, was in the back seat of a parked car on Monday when a gunman crept up to the vehicle and shot him in the head around 4:30 a.m. ET. The player was celebrating the victory with several Team St. Lucia USA teammates at a bar.
Tisson was with a 24-year-old woman who was skimmed on the shoulder after the bullet went through Tisson's skull. She was taken to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center.
Police are investigating the motive for the shooting, and there are no known suspects. They are looking into whether Tisson and his fellow teammates were involved in any type of altercation.
Tisson had been in New York since June with the St. Lucia team to train and play in exhibition games prior to the tournament.
Tisson's team played on Sunday, defeating a side representing St. Kitts and Nevis in an annual tournament known as the Digicel Caribbean Cup.
His goal came in the 80th minute and propelled the St. Lucia side into Sunday's final, where they will play the team representing Jamaica.
Monday was a day of mourning in St. Lucia for Tisson, who was popular among his teammates and was described as a "gentle giant," by Martin Daniel, Team St. Lucia USA's manager.
"We'll be playing for Phillip," the coach said. "That's what he would have wanted."
Teammates said they have a hard time believing Tisson would have been involved in an altercation or disagreement.
