Sharron Angle Said She Would Have Voted 'No' to Katrina Relief

(Aug. 31) -- Democrats have unearthed a recording of Sharron Angle, now the Republican candidate for Senate in Nevada, saying she would not have voted for federal relief for Hurricane Katrina -- a measure that received unanimous support in the Senate.

In a 2005 interview with conservative KLAV radio, Angle said, "I would like to go and join my voice with Mike Pence and others who, when the $62 billion came out to be spent on Katrina relief, he said, 'Wait a minute, I'm voting no.'" (Here's the audio.)

She was referring to Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., who in fact did vote for the $62 billion for the relief effort. His reluctance came from wanting the government to offset the funds, a position he backed away from after taking heat from leaders of his own party.

Angle has other controversial views. She'd like to eliminate Social Security and the Department of Education. She pines for the days when the federal income tax was unconstitutional. While this has made her a darling of the tea party, it's also complicated her bid to unseat unpopular incumbent Harry Reid, the Senate's Democratic majority leader. Reid has spent his campaign funds painting Angle as a fringe candidate. Still, the race is deadlocked -- in the latest polls Reid leads by 1 percent -- but it will be interesting to see if this old interview will shift more voters toward Reid.
