Tim Tebow, Brady Quinn to Battle for Top Understudy in Preseason Finale
Coach Josh McDaniels said earlier this week that the No. 2 job remains up for grabs.
"It's a competitive situation," McDaniels said. "Both players have done some good things. Both players have turned the ball over. I think both players have plenty of room to improve.
"From that standpoint, I think this game will probably help us determine kind of where we see everything."
Tebow, the second of the Broncos' two first-round picks, appears to have gained some momentum. He shook off his first interception of the preseason to lead a touchdown drive capped by a 3-yard scoring pass to fellow rookie Eric Decker in Sunday night's 34-17 exhibition win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Tebow also scored a touchdown on a 7-yard scramble in the Broncos' preseason opener at Cincinnati, though he suffered bruised ribs on the play when hit by two Bengals defenders. He missed the second exhibition game but returned to action against the Steelers.
Quinn has struggled throughout the preseason. He has completed just over 50 percent of his passes, going 18 for 35 for 185 yards thus far in three previous exhibitions.
Also, Quinn has taken six sacks to Tebow's one.
With the benefit of a year in McDaniels' program, Orton has operated more smoothly, confidently and efficiently in establishing himself early on as the No. 1 quarterback.
McDaniels noted that both Tebow and Quinn , acquired last spring in a trade with Cleveland, are still learning the Broncos' offensive system.
"It's been a challenge for both of them to learn what we're doing quickly, to rep it with different players each week and then try to play against a different style of defense, too," McDaniels said. "That's part of the preseason. That's part of the competition."
"I think it'll be an important week for them and a good week for us to evaluate both of them in a game."
