(Sept. 1) -- Discovery Channel hostage-taking suspect James J. Lee has been shot dead, according to multiple reports.

Montgomery County Police confirmed today at a press conference that a man entered Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Spring, Md., heavily armed and may have fired a round from a handgun and detonated an explosive device. He took three male hostages. The entire scene unfolded in the building's entryway.

After arriving on the scene, officers began negotiations with the gunman around 2:20 p.m. and continued to do so for the next two hours.

Meanwhile, a SWAT team moved into position and began training their weapons on the suspect. At one point, Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said, the suspect pulled out a weapon and aimed it at a hostage. It is unconfirmed at this point whether or not Lee pulled the trigger, but at that point police immediately fired upon the suspect, bringing him down at approximately 4:48 p.m.

According to Manger, explosive devices may still remain in the building. "At this point we now have what are four devices, two boxes and two backpacks, still in the building, and they must be safely removed." To police's knowledge, no one but the suspect was injured, and the hostages were able to get out.

David Leavy, Discovery Channel's executive vice president for corporate communications, thanked local law enforcement officers and company emergency staff and said that Discovery was "relieved" and that all employees were accounted for and safe and sound. He added that he looked forward to getting back to work "and making great TV" beginning Thursday.
