Here is what's happening around baseball on Wednesday Sept. 1, 2010: • Nyjer Morgan may be slight of stature, but he has suddenly developed a reputation as a headhunter at home plate. For the second time in less than a week, Morgan barreled into an opposing catcher and raised some eyebrows in the process. The Palm Beach Post notes that the Marlins were not too pleased after Morgan ran into Brett Hayes in the 10th inning Tuesday night -- injuring Hayes' left shoulder in the process.
You'll recall that Morgan angered his own manager when he ran into Cardinals catcher Bryan Anderson on Saturday, leading Jim Riggleman to bench the outfielder for the series finale out of fear that St. Louis might retaliate and start a beanball war. The Marlins had no trouble recalling that incident Tuesday night and it appeared to color their interpretation of what happened in Miami.
"I would say it was clean if I hadn't seen what he had done earlier in the week against St. Louis," Marlins infielder Chad Tracy told reporters. "It fired you up when you see Hayes on the ground hurting."
• The Yankees have long maintained a year-round presence in Tampa, Fla., their base for spring training and home of the Class A Tampa Yankees minor league team. But a report Wednesday by WFTV says the Yankees may move their minor league team from George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa to Orlando. Some details remain to be worked out -- like the small matter of whether they'll need a new stadium -- but an announcement of some sort is expected later this week.
• The Mets are willing to talk about a multi-year deal with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey following this season, the New York Daily News reports. Dickey, 35, is arbitration-eligible this winter and thus under the Mets' control through 2011 regardless, but the Mets might like to lock him up for a bit longer after his impressive work this season.
• The Yankees made a change in their rotation, giving Javier Vazquez the start Saturday and moving Dustin Moseley to the bullpen.
Injury Ward
• Freddy Garcia left his start Wednesday after only 60 pitches with a stiff lower back. He said after the game he expects to make his next start.
• Tom Gorzelanny was hit in the pitching hand by a Jose Tabata liner in the third inning and left the game. He'll get X-rays.
• Veteran lefty reliever Bobby Seay, who missed this season with a shoulder injury, will have surgery in two weeks and miss all of 2011, he tells the Detroit Free Press.
Transaction Wire
• The Twins will send right-hander Loek Van Mil -- who was designated for assignment last week -- to the Angels to complete the Brian Fuentes trade.
• The Red Sox released Jeremy Hermida Tuesday night after informing him he wouldn't get a September call-up.
• The White Sox designated right-hander Clevelan Santeliz for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for call-up Gregory Infante. The Orioles likewise designated Lou Montanez for assignment to clear a spot for Robert Andino.
