Melanie Oudin Loses US OpenAmerican Melanie Oudin was ousted in the second round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday, unable to replicate her 2009 fairy tale run when she reached the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows. Alona Bondarenko, seeded 29th, defeated Oudin in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. Oudin lost 12 consecutive points to Bondarenko to finish the match.

Oudin, who looked listless in the first set, never gained any consistent momentum against the 26-year-old Ukrainian. Oudin played shaky throughout the match, committing 38 unforced errors in only two sets.

Her serve was broken seven times and she only converted on 49 percent of her first-serve points.

There were times in the second set where momentum almost shifted for Oudin when she started to utilize her backhand slice, but nothing fully came together for the 18-year-old.

Oudin, who is ranked No. 43 on tour, will plummet when the next set of WTA rankings are released. Because of her quarterfinal appearance in last year's tournament, she had a lot of WTA points she was unable to defend this week.

Not all was bleak for the American women on Wednesday. Top-seeded American Venus Williams defeated Rebecca Marino of Canada in straight sets 7-6 (3), 6-3. The third-seeded Williams, who won the title in 2000 and 2001, has never lost before the fourth round in her career at Flushing Meadows.
