Top-ranked Serena Williams is unlikely to return later this month at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, a source close to the situation told ESPN. She was expected to make her maiden debut at the tournament in Tokyo for the WTA Premier event that carries total purse of $2,000,000. Her target date to return to the tour is now unknown.Serena, who is not playing at this year's U.S. Open due to a cut on her right foot that required surgery, continues to experience delays in her recovery. Williams cut her foot on broken glass at a restaurant while she was in Munich during July to play an exhibition match against Kim Clijsters.
Clijsters said she saw the lacerations on Serena's foot and "it's not something that she's making up or that it's a small cut or anything." Clijsters also noted that both of Serena's feet were cut in the accident. Serena had surgery on her right foot July 15.
The 28-year-old Williams sister has not played competitively since winning Wimbledon in July, where Serena claimed her 13th Grand Slam title. Her doctors advised her not to play at the U.S. Open and it is now not known when she will return to the court next.
