Tennessee Titans' RB Chris Johnson Unfazed by Preseason Results
And while Tennessee Titans followers are worried about just about everything these days, Johnson said worrying about the rushing game is particularly pointless.
"The Titans have been here before," Johnson reasoned. "They've always been fine before, too."
Johnson said that will be the case this year, too.
"Since I have been here in the preseason, we have not game-planned," Johnson told Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean. "Last year we absolutely had no running game in the preseason, and we came out and did a nice job when the season started. So there is no pressure.''
Last Saturday, The Titans lost to the Carolina Panthers, 15-7, getting shut out in a first half in which they managed just 50 total yards and four first downs. Johnson, a 2,000-yard rusher last season, rushed for just 10 yards on eight carries and has 30 yards on 19 preseason carries; that's an average of 2.1 yards a carries. And, against the Panthers, Wyatt reported that his rushes went for no gain, two yards, four yards, minus-one, minus-two, five yards, two yards and no gain.
Titans' Head Coach Jeff Fisher has been consistent throughout preseason and training camp saying he isn't concerned about Johnson, and reiterated that this week.
"You don't do what he has done the last few years and forget about it," Fisher said. "He is fine. We haven't game-planned, and there's a lot of things we haven't used (in the run game).''
This has been the Titans' stance not only when discussing Johnson's preseason, but when discussing the entire loss to Carolina. NFL Teams approach preseason differently, and winning preseason games is of different importance to different franchises. The Colts emphasize it very little and are 0-3 this preseason.
The Titans have emphasized the running game very little this preseason, and instead have focused on teaching young players the scheme. The result is a basic scheme that will become much more complicated – and more difficult to stop – once the season begins.
"It is not a thing where you turn it off and turn it on,'' Johnson said. "It is a thing where you game-plan and you have a whole game to actually get things right, and we haven't had that. In the whole course of a game (during the regular season) you probably don't have a running game in the first half. But once you make adjustments, in the second half the running game picks up. We'll be all right.''
