The Fantasy Impact of Manny Ramirez's Move to White Sox

The Chicago White Sox placed a waiver claim on Manny Ramirez last week, and Los Angeles decided ridding the team of the star and his contract was worth not receiving anything in trade. After a first day with Chicago where Ramirez didn't play, he started on Wednesday, going 1-for-3 with a single in his Chicago debut.

While injuries have caused 2010 to be a down year for Ramirez, he posted a .311/.405/.510 line with the Dodgers in just under 200 at-bats. His health should be less of an issue in September, as the White Sox plan to play him exclusively at designated hitter.

In his career, Ramirez has hit .338 with 15 HRs in 213 at-bats in U.S. Cellular Field. Hitting fifth in the White Sox lineup, he'll have Alex Rios (.293/.341/.473) and Paul Konerko (.320/.400/.583) in front of him, giving the dreadlocked masher plenty of RBI opportunities.

AL-only owners must be all over Ramirez, as he's likely to play significantly more than any September call-up. Available in one-out-of-five mixed leagues, all owners will want to check on his availability in their leagues. He'll be at the top of his game heading into an offseason where he'll be a free agent looking for a full-time DH job.

For a projection, I see Ramirez picking up close to 100 at-bats in September, hitting .320 with five to six HRs and 15 to 20 RBIs. Those stats are enough to make him starter-worthy either in your outfield or as your utility player. I have Manny in multiple leagues, and I'm excited for this final month of the season.
