What can be learned from 13th-ranked Miami's 45-0 rout of Florida A&M in the season opener for both teams on Thursday night? Well, just about nothing. The talent gap between the programs is as wide as the state of Florida, including the panhandle. The game was expected to be a rout, and it was that and then some.
But the Miami faithful had to be thrilled with the performance of junior quarterback Jacory Harris, who is a major part of the Hurricanes' hopes for a return to their former glory.
It's almost a no-win situation for Harris. If he looks bad, a sky-is-falling situation develops. If he looks good, so what? It was Florida A&M. Harris, though, looked better than anyone could have expected. He had better numbers than most quarterbacks probably have on many of those hot summer afternoons when they gather to throw to their receivers without any defenders present.
Before the game was two minutes old, the 6-foot-4, 190-pound Harris found Leonard Hankerson with a 21-yard touchdown pass. Before the first quarter was over, Harris and Hankerson hooked up again on a touchdown pass. This one came from 41 yards out. Before the second quarter was four minutes old, Harris threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Damien Berry.
Harris was done for the night before the halftime festivities started. His stat line? How about 16 passes thrown, 13 passes completed, 215 yards gained (and those three touchdowns).
By the time the game came to its merciful end, Miami had gained 421 yards and held the Rattlers to 111. Miami was up 35-0 at the half before throwing it into neutral and playing out the second half.
Things get considerably tougher next weekend. In one of many marquee matchups on the Sept. 11 schedule, Harris and Miami travel to Columbus, Ohio, to meet fellow Heisman candidate Terrelle Pryor and the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes. Miami will certainly face considerably more resistance in the Buckeyes than it did against Florida A&M. If Harris' numbers match those from his debut, it will be time to be very impressed.
Now is not that time. But it is time to give a nod to an excellent start, and Harris certainly had that.
