When you think September call-ups, you think about kids getting their first shot at the major leagues, their whole careers ahead of them. But there's still room on expanded rosters for the old guys.

The Diamondbacks on Friday will add Mike Hampton to their roster as a reliever, bringing the veteran up a week ahead of his 38th birthday in a role he hasn't played in quite a while. A year removed from rotator cuff surgery, Hampton will serve as a reliever for Arizona, and his first trip from the bullpen to the mound will represent his first relief appearance in the majors since 1994. He has made four relief appearances for Arizona's Triple-A team since signing a minor league deal last month.

He has made 352 major league starts since then, but despite a stellar 1999 season that saw him go 22-4 with a 2.90 ERA for the Astros and place second in Cy Young voting, he has been better known for the injuries that have kept him from following through on the expectations accompanying the eight-year, $121 million contract he signed in 2001.

This is a courtesy call for Hampton, as the D'backs obviously don't have anything left to play for in September. But whether this amounts to a swan song for the lefty or a springboard back to a regular job in 2011, it'll be interesting to see how he responds to life as a reliever.
