Packers Float Breno Giacomini as Bait

As NFL teams prepare to cut down their rosters to the 53-man limit on Saturday, they're all sniffing around to see if a player they plan to cut could instead be traded. In the case of the Green Bay Packers, they want to create the perception that offensive tackle Breno Giacomini is ripe for a trade.

Citing an unnamed source, Bob McGinn of the Journal Sentinel reports that several teams are interested in Giacomini.

McGinn is a good reporter, but I'm going to predict that this one turns out to be wrong, and there aren't any teams interested in trading for him -- or at least not interested enough to actually pull the trigger on a trade. This sounds more like a case of a Packers official telling McGinn that teams are interested in Giacomini in an effort to get teams to become interested in Giacomini.
Frankly, why would any team trade for him? A fifth-round pick out of Louisville in 2008, Giacomini has gotten on the field for just one NFL game. If the Packers haven't found any use for him in his two seasons with the team, why would another team give the Packers anything for him?

You can't blame the Packers for trying to create a market for a draft pick who never panned out, but I don't buy it. Expect Giacomini to be released -- not traded -- on Saturday.
