Dustin PedroiaInjured Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will have surgery to insert a screw into his left foot on Friday, according to the Boston Globe.

The surgery is expected to keep him out for the rest of the season.

The Globe, citing a major league source, said that Pedroia was examined on Wednesday night in Baltimore by a specialist, who helped determine that the 2008 AL MVP would need the procedure.

Pedroia first injured his foot in late June, breaking a bone when he fouled a ball off of it in San Francisco.

He returned in mid-August and played two games before being placed back on the disabled list because the injury wasn't healing as rapidly as the Red Sox hoped it would.

Pedroia is just one of a number of Red Sox stars who have missed significant time this year with injury, effectively killing the team's hopes of staying in contention.

First baseman Kevin Youkilis and outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron are also out for the season, and catchers Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek and pitchers Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matsuzaka have also been sidelined for significant stretches of time at various points during the season.
