Chiefs Running Back Jackie Battle Making Presence Felt in Crowded Stable
Buried on the depth chart behind Thomas Jones, Jamaal Charles and rookie sensation Dexter McCluster, Battle nevertheless emerged as the Chiefs' leading rusher of the preseason.
He helped the Chiefs avoid a second consecutive winless preseason under coach Todd Haley by rushing for 67 yards in Thursday's 17-13 victory over Green Bay. He got 50 of those yards on one run that stood out as the Chiefs' longest play of the preseason and he also bulled his way into the end zone from 1-yard out on a fourth-down play.
Battle, who has been with the Chiefs since 2007 -- but has had only seven carries over the last two years because of injuries and a slip down the depth chart -- finished the preseason with 180 yards rushing and a 5.1-yard average per carry.
"Thomas and Jamaal are both really good backs," Battle told The Kansas City Star. "I just want to have some kind of role on this team. I'm still competing for a job. Nothing's changed. I'm just trying to find my place."
Battle could figure in the Chiefs' short-yardage offense, having shown an ability to get a yard when that's what the team needs. He also is playing a prominent role on special teams, which should help him in his quest to secure a roster spot.
