Julian Peterson Impressed With Lions' 3-1 Preseason Record; I'm Not

Lions linebacker Julian Peterson has been in the NFL for 11 years, played for three different teams, and generally knows how things work in the NFL.

But instead of acting like a grizzled old veteran, Peterson sounds positively giddy about the Lions' 3-1 preseason record.

"We look real good," Peterson said after the Lions came from behind to beat the Bills in Thursday night's preseason finale. "We made dramatic strides from last year. You can see the offense can put up points at any time."

Sorry, but I don't buy it.

To begin with, that win Thursday night? It was the product of a bunch of guys who are going to get cut by the Lions out-playing a bunch of guys who are going to get cut by the Bills. Peterson thinks the offense can put up points at any time? Think again. The Lions' offensive starters didn't score at all on Thursday night; they didn't get on the board until scoring a touchdown with just 10 seconds left in the first half, when the Bills' and Lions' starters had long since departed.

Before that touchdown, the Bills' starters had built up a 16-0 lead over the Lions' starters. Yes, it's true, the Lions' backups rallied and out-scored the Bills 28-7, but so what? Most of those players on the field at that time won't be NFL players this season. The Lions and Bills will each cut 22 players from their roster Friday or Saturday, and most of the guys responsible for the Lions outscoring the Bills down the stretch will be among the players released.

As for the Lions' other three preseason games? They were blown out by the Steelers, they looked OK against the Broncos but needed a fourth-quarter comeback (again, with players who won't make the final roster) to win, and they were getting shredded by the Browns while the starters were on the field before winning on the strength of two meaningless fourth-quarter touchdowns.

So, yes: The Lions won three games in the preseason. They'll be lucky to win three more in the regular season.
