Russian Wildfires Flare in the South, Killing Eight More
The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry released the grim statistics, saying that 532 buildings and 20 villages had been consumed by the flames in the latest conflagration, Russia's Interfax news agency reported.
According to Reuters, 2,500 firefighters battled the blaze, which is in Volgograd and Saratov provinces. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin pledged $25.4 million in aid to the two affected regions, Agence France-Presse reported.
Extreme summer heat, drought conditions and high winds have proven the perfect ingredients to stoke a particularly deadly and devastating wildfire season in Russia. As Surge Desk reported, wildfires swept through central and western Russia last month, killing more than 50 people, and burning approximately 25 million acres.
