Six North Carolina starters will not play in their season opener on Saturday against No. 16 LSU in Atlanta for the Chick-fil-A kickoff, the university announced on Friday. The six starters -- defensive tackle Marvin Austin, cornerback Charles Brown, cornerback Kendric Burney, wide receiver Greg Little (right), defensive end Michael McAdoo and defensive end Robert Quinn have been declared ineligible for violating school and/or NCAA rules.

While the NCAA's investigation continues against North Carolina, six other players will be withheld from the game for the No. 18 Tar Heels – running back Shaun Draughn, defensive end Linwan Euwell, safety Brian Gupton, running back Ryan Houston, safety Da'Norris Searcy and safety Jonathan Smith.

It is still not clear how much time these 12 players will miss this season as the NCAA continues their two-pronged investigation against North Carolina. The NCAA is looking into possible agent-related benefit issues and allegations of academic misconduct.

North Carolina has been working with the NCAA to determine the eligibility status of three other unnamed players who did not travel to Atlanta with the team. The Tar Heels and coach Butch Davis left Friday morning.

"As I've said, there is no single game more important than the character and integrity of this university," Davis said in the release. "We are disappointed the players' choices have denied them the opportunity to compete alongside their teammates and represent the University of North Carolina."

The NCAA first visited the North Carolina campus in July, investigating whether Austin and Little were in contact with agents or had received any benefits. Since then, the probe turned two-pronged and has expanded into alleged academic misconduct.

"We're obviously very disappointed to learn that the actions of a number of our student-athletes have resulted in their being unable to compete in Saturday's game," athletic director Dick Baddour said in a prepared statement. "It is important to note again that people should not make assumptions as to the nature of each student-athlete's involvement with these issues."
