Willie Parker's Stay In Washington Was Short

When Willie Parker signed a free-agent contact with the Washington Redskins, he had to know that he was joining a crowded backfield. With Larry Johnson, Clinton Portis and Ryan Torain also on the roster, there were only going to be so many handoffs to spread around.

On Saturday, Parker found out that he was the odd man out. The former Steelers starter has been told that he is being cut and is free to shop for another team. Parker played sparingly and poorly in the Redskins' first three preseason games (9 carries for 15 yards). He did play a little better in the final preseason game, but by then, his spot on the roster was likely already lost.

Finding another job might be difficult for Parker. He hasn't shown the same burst since he broke his leg in the second to last game of the 2007 season. At that point Parker was in the running to win the NFL rushing title as he rushed for 1,000-plus yards for three straight seasons. Since, Parker has lost some of his big-play ability. He had 12 20-plus-yard runs in both 2006 and 2007, but only six combined in 2008 and 2009.

It doesn't help that Parker is a poor receiver out of the backfield and doesn't play special teams, so he doesn't fit as a third-down back or a third back. There has been some rumbling about Parker returning to the Steelers (Isaac Redmon and Mewelde Moore are Pittsburgh's primary backups), but, again, Parker's lack of special teams skills would seem to limit that option.
