Kansas State and UCLA engaged in a ground war all afternoon, but a few quick air strikes nearly decided the game. K-State ended up with a 31-22 victory. K-State QB Carson Coffman hit Brodrick Smith on a short play-action touchdown pass to give the Wildcats a 24-16 lead with two minutes left. But the Bruins came right back, with QB Kevin Prince getting UCLA into the end zone on two long pass plays. The ensuing two-point conversion attempt, however, failed.
The Wildcats' ground attack finished the job, with RB Daniel Thomas capping a career game with his second touchdown, this one a 35-yard breakout which sealed the game. Thomas ended up with 234 yards on the day, as K-State relied on its rushing attack, turning to the run 53 times in 70 plays from scrimmage.
Prince had a rough game overall, completing just nine of 26 passes and tossing two interceptions. Before the closing TD drive, Prince had less than 60 yards through the air. His counterpart Coffman wasn't particularly prolific either, finishing the game with 67 yards. But he was efficient, completing 11-of-16 in support of the Wildcats' run game.
Coffman exited the game briefly in the fourth quarter, apparently due to cramps. QB Collin Klein stepped in until Coffman returned.
