Set to make $7 million in 2010, wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh had to stand out in training camp for the Seattle Seahawks to keep him around. When that was clearly not going to happen, Houshmandzadeh became the subject of trade talks, but his salary made any hopes to make a trade someone slim.
That left the Seahawks with little choice in their view. Instead of keeping Houshmandzadeh around to underachieve with such a high salary, the team decided to release him, in a move first reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen.
Houshmandzadeh signed last year in Seattle, with the hope that the Seahawks would finally have a star receiver. The problem was that Houshmandzadeh was overvalued badly on the open market. His 79 receptions, 911 yards, and three touchdowns in 2009 are not at all impressive, but they're not drastically different than the numbers he posted in a contract year for the Bengals in 2008.
The receiver was wined and dined by the Vikings last year before deciding to go to Seattle, so given the Vikings' shortcomings at receiver, it makes sense to think he could end up there. For now, the Vikings say they're not interested in Houshmandzadeh, but that could change after Week 1. If the Vikings wait, they wouldn't have to guarantee the salary of Houshmandzadeh, who turns 33 in late September, for the entire season.
