Titans' Jeff Fisher Laser-Focused on Raiders
But that's not because Jeff Fisher hasn't been working toward that.
The Titans, who won six of their last eight games last season to finish 8-8 a year after winning the AFC South title, will open against Oakland Sept. 12. And while some NFL coaches are secretive when it comes to preparation plans, Fisher was candid this week when asked if the coaching staff has begun looking toward the Raiders.
"I didn't watch a play of the Saints last week," Fisher said Friday, a day after the Titans' 2010 preseason finale against the Saints.
And while Fisher said the players won't begin focusing on the Raiders until next week, he did address one issue that became a bigger issue late in the preseason:
The performance of wide receiver Kenny Britt.
Britt, the the Titans' first-round selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, was pulled from the preseason finale after a difficult performance, and Fisher called Britt's development an ongoing process.
"We are going to continue to work with him and his ability to focus and put distractions behind him and not let them carry over from one play to the next or carry over into a game," Fisher said. "It is a part of the learning process. If I suspect that there are issues, then he is not a part of the 45. That is pretty simple. If his mind is clear and he is focused and ready to play, he is potentially a really good player. If I suspect there to be a problem, we have other receivers that I will play instead of Kenny."
Fisher also said linebacker David Thornton will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list after undergoing hip and shoulder surgery in the off-season.
"I think he has done an extraordinary job to get to this point," Fisher said. "However, he is still not ready to play. He will benefit from the time. We're going to allow him to have the next six weeks to continue to get himself to a position where then we will be able to evaluate him in an environment where we will be able to make a decision.
"It is hard to evaluate him at this point because he can't participate in practice. ... This is a unique type of surgery that there have not been a lot. It was not done here and so it is hard to project and estimate return to date time periods."
