Fantasy Impact: Montario Hardesty Placed on Injured Reserve

Heading into the offseason, the Cleveland Browns wanted to add a young talented running back to form a committee with Jerome Harrison, and they did so by drafting Montario Hardesty in the second round of the NFL rookie draft. Hardesty carried a fair amount of fantasy buzz heading into August, as he was a pretty high draft pick and figured to receive close to 200 carries in a rushing offense that ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in 2009.

Hardesty's stock came to a crashing halt this weekend, when he was placed on injured reserve with a torn ACL. Dynasty league owners will likely stash him and see how he recovers heading into 2011, but redraft owners can cut him loose.

This is obviously great news for Harrison owners. He picked up 194 carries and 34 receptions in 2009, while the Browns had 498 rushing attempts as a team (sixth in the NFL). Even if they pass more this season with Jake Delhomme under center, Harrison only needs to stay healthy to pick up at least 250 carries and 40 receptions. He's a quality RB2 heading into the season.

Barring the addition of another quality running back, Peyton Hillis should finish second on the team in carries with around 125-150. He'll also likely work as a short-yardage and goal line back, making him very valuable in leagues that score heavy toward touchdowns (if the Browns ever score). He's a must handcuff for Harrison owners, and will likely come dirt cheap heading into the first week of football action.

James Davis is slotted to take the No. 3 role, though he's been largely unimpressive and isn't worth monitoring in standard leagues.

The Browns will probably be on the lookout to add a running back, now that teams have been trimmed to 53 players across the league. Candidates to come to Cleveland could include Marshawn Lynch (via trade), Julius Jones, Willie Parker, J.J. Arrington, Joique Bell and LeGarrette Blount. Of those options, only Lynch would immediately cut into the running back rotation discussed above.
