Sporting her fourth outfit of the tournament, Venus Williams defeated 16th-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel in straight sets on Sunday, 7-6 (3), 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open. Venus, who struggled closing her opponent out at times during the match, still managed to break the Israeli five times during the match. Venus advances to the quarterfinals at the Open for the 10th time in 12 appearances, and Peer is still yet to win a set against Venus in six career matches.
Despite being very effective on her serve -- winning 81 percent of her first-serve points with six aces -- Venus had an unusually high number of unforced errors at 25.
"Yeah, you know, it's always good to have a tough match, I think, or tougher match, kind of a match where you have to challenge yourself against your opponent and the conditions and everything and just continue to stay tough and to stay positive," Venus said after the match.
The opening set went into a tiebreaker after Venus failed to convert on five break points to close out the set. After Peer held to even the first set at 6-6, Venus took control of the breaker and took an early lead -- consequently winning seven of the 10 points to claim the opening set and grab the momentum into the second set.
Venus went up an early break in the third game of the second set to take a 2-1 lead. She rolled thereafter, right into the quarterfinals where she will face this year's French Open champion, Francesca Schiavone, of Italy. Schiavone has yet to win a match against Venus in their seven career matches.
Venus is not only the last American woman left in the draw, but she is the last back-to-back women's champion -- claiming the title in 2000 and 2001. Venus, 30, doesn't focus on her age when it comes to outlasting younger opponents. "Oh, I don't even know how I feel," Venus said. "Well, still young, I would say. Still young, especially in the head. Really young in the head."
Her top-ranked sister, Serena, who is not playing in the tournament due to a foot injury, was on hand for the second match in a row to watch her older sister play.
