NEW YORK -- Kim Clijsters set up a semifinal match at the U.S. Open with Venus Williams by defeating No. 5-seeded Samantha Stosur 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Clijsters, the defending champion, endured her toughest match of the tournament against the 26-year-old Stosur, who is playing the best tennis of her career and is currently ranked No. 6 on the tour.

Trailing 3-2 in the third set, Clijsters won four straight games for the victory. In a match in which holding serve was a challenge, Clijsters broke Stosur in eight games on her way to victory. Stosur broke Clijsters' serve seven times.

Prior to this year, Stosur had never advanced past the second round in her first six appearances in the main draw. In a four-year span from 2005-2008, she lost in the first round each time. But she entered this U.S. Open having advanced to at least the quarterfinals in nine of her last ten tournaments and winning at Charleston.

Clijsters is on a 19-match winning streak at Flushing Meadows and is 25-1 at the Open in her last four visits. She won the tournament in 2005 and 2009.

After winning her semifinal match earlier Tuesday against Francesca Schiavone, Williams called Clijsters, "A great competitor who always seems to play her best at this tournament."

Clijsters, who beat Williams last year in the U.S, Open, said of her semifinal opponent, "She's capable of doing amazing things, and you just have to hang in there and push her, and at the same time be aggressive. Go for shots and try to make her make the errors. I'll have to be ready. I'll have to be able to move well. I'll have to retrieve a lot of balls."
