Sam QuerreyFor the second consecutive year, there are no American men in the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open.

"We're trying our best," Querrey noted in regards to the absence of American players. "I was very close, but hopefully next year is another year, and hopefully have a few guys in the quarters."

Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland defeated 20th-seeded Sam Querrey in a five-set marathon -- 7-6 (9), 6-7 (5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 -- on Monday. The 25th-seeded Wawrinka, who turned pro in 2002, reaches his first ever quarterfinal appearance at a Grand Slam singles event.

While their match statistics were very similar, Wawrinka generated one more break in the match. Querrey, the 22-year-old Californian, was denied his first ever quarterfinal appearance at a Grand Slam.

On Wawrinka's second match point in the 10th game of the fifth set, he broke Querrey to claim victory in the fourth-round match.

Wawrinka noted that he picked up on Querrey's weariness in the final set, "The last four games he was really tired, and was really difficult for him to stay with his game. He change his game because he was tired."

Both players went up against strong winds at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 25-year-old Wawrinka is known for his hard, flat groundstrokes, but his all-around tactical play pushed him through the draw. Querrey, who battled hard in the four-hour, 28-minute match, did not muster up enough big points in the final set.

Wawrinka will face 12th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia. Although Wawrinka has never advanced this far in a major tournament before, the Swiss native has big-match experience. He claimed the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in doubles play with compatriot Roger Federer for Switzerland.
